All objects in the universe can be recognized by five basic characteristics: smell, taste, form, touch and sound. These correspond to the five basic principle elements that constitute every object in the universe, namely, the absolute earth element (pruthvi), the absolute water element (apa), the absolute fire element(tej), the absolute air element (vayu) and the absolute ether element (akash). Ether is the subtlest of them all and the earth element is the most gross.
