| Catherine Potter, considered one
of the finest bansuri players in Canada, has
been honing the art of North Indian classical music with Hariprasad Chaurasia,
the worldÕs leading bansuri exponent, since 1986. With improvisation at
the heart of her artistic endeavors, she creates an overwhelmingly spiritual
sense of timeless beauty. Potter has performed and toured extensively
in North America and she has been featured on numerous radio and television
programs including Radio CanadaÕs La vie d'artiste, La Fte de la musique
and Les grand concerts. Returning regularly to India for study and performances,
Potter has appeared with such legendary figures as Hariprasad Chaurasia,
Zakir Hussain, Bhawani Shankar, Rupak Kulkarni, and Shubhen Chatterjee.
Also worth noting is her highly praised debut CD, Bansuri, recorded
in Mumbai with tabla-master Kalinath Mishra. Renowned for her grace
and her essence, Catherine Potter has carved out a distinctive niche
in the Canadian world music scene. She has contributed to a wide array of
cross-cultural collaborations in concert and on recordings: Tasa, Ramasutra,
Adham Shaikh, Ganesh Anandan, Lori Cullen, Nathalie Dussault, Hardeep Buckshi,
Ganesh Anandan and Lilison di Kanara, to name just a few. She is also
active as a composer/performer for film, theatre and dance (Menaka Thakkar
Dance Company, Teesri Duniya, Monique Juteau, CirquÕart). A grantee of the
Quebec Art Council and The Canada Council, Potter has been honored with
several awards for her excellence in India and worldwide including the Shastri
Institute Fellowship and the Jon Higgins Award. Since 2000, Catherine Potter
has made her own live ensemble, The Duniya Project, the focus of her talent
and has performed in several prestigious festivals and media appearances.
Her original compositions reflect a highly personal artistic synthesis,
combining the essence of Indian music with a contemporary world music sensibility.
Catherine PotterÕs second CD, The Duniya Project, is now in the works and
